Exhibition “Raiment of the Soul” Vangelis Kyris – Anatoly Georgiev

 

The opening of the enriched emblematic exhibition entitled “Raiment of the Soul” by the artistic duo Vangelis Kyris – Anatoli Georgiev, held on Monday 9 September 2024 at the Thessaloniki Branch of MIET / Villa Kapantzi, under the auspices of H.E. The President of the Hellenic Republic​​ Katerina Sakellaropoulou. It is an initiative of the Papageorgiou Foundation in cooperation with the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation.

 

In the crowded central hall of Villa Kapantzi, the opening event was greeted by Mr. Gikas Hardouvelis, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Bank of Greece and MIET, Mrs. Zoe Papageorgiou, member of the Board of Directors of the Papageorgiou Foundation, Mr. Iasonas Fotilas, Deputy Minister of Culture as representative of the President of the Greek Government and Mr. Stelios Angeloudis, Mayor of Thessaloniki. The event was also honoured by the presence of many representatives of institutional, consular and cultural bodies of the city, as well as representatives of the institutions cooperating for the exhibition.

 

This initiative, beyond the basis of the initial presentation of costumes from the collections of the National Historical Museum, the Historical Museum of Crete and the Heraklion Greek Women Lyceum, was accompanied by a substantial partnership of institutions from Thessaloniki and Northern Greece: The Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and the Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA), the Jewish Community and the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, the Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia-Thrace, the Lyceum of Hellenes of Thessaloniki, the Lyceum of the Greek Women of Naoussa and the Folklore Dance Group of YMCA, opened the showcases, and cabinets of the local communities they represent, to facilitate the composition of the exhibition with new exhibits.

 

From the permanent collection of IMMA, traditional Macedonian costumes and official uniforms are presented in the exhibition, such as:
The ‘doulamas’ of the Macedonian fighter Dimitrios Tsitsimis,
The official consular uniform of Lambros Enyalis,
The uniform of Admiral Ioannis Demestichas,
A velvet costume (probably bridal) with gold embroidery,
Costumes from Alexandria of Imathia,

The “festive” uniform of the Macedonian Fighter George Roubesis or Captain Tzavaras is further presented (Collection of the Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia – Thrace, exhibited at IMMA).

 

From IMMA, the opening ceremony was attended by the Secretary General of the Board of Directors, Professor of the University of Macedonia and Director of the Research Centre for Macedonian History and Documentation of IMMA, Mrs. Stavroula Mavrogeni, the former President of IMMA, Professor of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Mr. Vasilis Gounaris, the Director of IMMA, Mrs. Athena Pavlidou, the scientific staff of the Foundation, as well as the President of the Association “Friends of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle”, Mrs. Maria Sarigiannidou.
