Talks and Guided Tours at IMMA’s Nautical Chart Exhibition

“Between the Waves and the Maps of the Aegean”

As part of the successful run of the Nautical Chart Exhibition by Professor Emeritus Paraskevas Savvaidis (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), titled “Between the Waves and the Maps of the Aegean,” the Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA) is organizing a series of talks and guided tours and invites you to attend.

The exhibition showcases the efforts and adventures of British hydrographers in the mid-19th century, who explored and mapped coastlines, islands, and ports for the British Admiralty. Captains and sailors aboard hydrographic vessels conducted precise surveys of the Aegean islands, the coasts of Greece, Asia Minor, Crete, and Cyprus. At a time when geographical knowledge of the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean was nearly nonexistent, these hydrographers produced high-quality nautical charts. Their work significantly contributed not only to navigation, cartography, and geography but also to archaeological research and natural history.
