Comics at the Museum!

The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle welcomes autumn with a new series of creative comics workshops for children aged 6–12, inviting them to explore the Modern History of Macedonia in a creative and interactive way.

Through the Museum’s collections, exhibits and historical material, children will become acquainted with people and events from the Modern History of Macedonia and discover stories that can be transformed into comics. Over the course of five sessions, participants will become familiar with the basic techniques of storytelling, character creation, drawing and comic illustration, while also experimenting with painting and different forms of visual storytelling.

From selecting a story and developing the initial idea to composing panels, writing dialogue, creating characters and illustrating them, children will experience every stage of the creative process. The aim of the series is for each child, by the end of the workshops, to have created their own complete comic and their own story inspired by the Museum’s historical material.

The workshops include:

• exploring the Museum’s collections, exhibits and spaces
• discovering people and events from the Modern History of Macedonia
• searching for and using historical material as a source of inspiration
• an introduction to the language and storytelling techniques of comics
• character creation and story development
• familiarisation with drawing and painting techniques
• composing panels, dialogue and visual narratives
• creating and completing an original personal comic

The programme is designed and delivered by *Dimitris Trakosas, illustrator, Art teacher and co-creator of Guagua Planet.

The series consists of five workshops:

Children are encouraged to bring a sketchbook and pencil case with them, while the basic workshop materials will be provided by the Museum. The series has been designed as a unified creative process that develops gradually and concludes with each participant creating their own personal comic.

The workshop series will take place provided that the required minimum number of participants is reached.

Participation Fee: €60 per person for the full series of five workshops. A 10% discount is available for siblings.

*Short Biography

Dimitris Trakosas was born and raised in Thessaloniki. From an early age, he became involved in painting, always having a pencil and a paintbrush in hand, while at the same time developing a particular love for comics and fairy tales, both in terms of illustration and storytelling.

He is a graduate of the School of Fine Arts of the University of Ioannina and has also attended courses at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Bourges, France. He holds two postgraduate degrees, one in Graphic Design from the University of Lancashire in England and one in Information Systems from the University of Macedonia.

He is currently continuing his studies as a PhD candidate at the University of Ioannina, with fairy tales as his main field of research. He has participated in numerous group photography and visual arts exhibitions and has held one solo photography exhibition in Ioannina and one solo comics exhibition in Thessaloniki.

Together with Afroditi Rizou, he has also created an imaginary world that bears many similarities to Earth: the planet Guagua. Through his work, he seeks to create stories and visual works that appeal to a broad audience regardless of age, subtly incorporating messages that can be discovered by viewers of all ages.

He also teaches Art at the Franco-Hellenic School of Kalamari.
