The exhibition “Yannis and Milto Manakia: The Faces Behind the Lens” is traveling to Patras.

The exhibition of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia Foundation (IMMA) titled “Giannis and Miltos Manaki. The Faces Behind the Lens” has traveled to Patras, where it will be hosted until January 24, 2025, at Mosaic Hub, in the heart of the city, at Markato.

The opening of the exhibition was held with great success on Thursday, December 5, 2024. A greeting was delivered by the Director of IMMA, Ms. Athina Pavlidou, who emphasized the extroversion of IMMA and the importance of its collaborations with cultural institutions and spaces across Greece. She also warmly thanked the co-organizers for hosting the exhibition in Patras. The curator of the exhibition, Director of the Center for Macedonian History and Documentation at IMMA, Professor Ms. Stavroula Mavrogeni, presented in detail the work of the pioneering photographers and filmmakers, the Manaki Brothers, and the impact they left in the Balkans, while simultaneously guiding the audience through the exhibition. The exhibition was also visited by delegates attending the 6th Conference on Cultural and Creative Industries, held in Patras on Friday, December 6, and Saturday, December 7.

The exhibition showcases a large collection of photographs from the personal archive of Leonidas Manakis, son of Miltos Manakis, which was donated to IMMA by the Honorary Ambassador, Mr. Alexandros Mallias. The Manaki Brothers, originally from Avdella, Grebena, traveled through the countryside and major urban centers of the Balkans, documenting not only the lives of working-class people, moments of relaxation and entertainment, but also architectural landmarks, historical, and social events that marked the changes of the first half of the 20th century. Visitors will also have the opportunity to watch the documentary of the same name, produced by filmmaker Akis Loukas.

The exhibition, one of IMMA’s most successful temporary exhibitions, was initially organized at the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle in 2023, as part of the 8th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art. It has already traveled to Pristina and Grebena, and after Patras, it will continue its journey to other cities in Greece.

In Patras, the exhibition is organized by the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia Foundation, with the support of PIVOT AMKE and Mosaic, and co-organized by the Region of Western Greece.
