The Exhibition “Yannis and Miltos Manakia. The faces behind the lens” travels to Grevena
Exhibitions 13-22 October 2023
City Hall of Grevena
The exhibition of the Museum of Macedonian Struggle “Yannis and Miltos Manakia. The faces behind the lens”, which was organized with great success in the framework of the 8th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, travels to Grevena.
A century later, the Manakia Brothers return to their homeland, where their work is presented for the first time. The pioneering filmmakers and photographers were born and raised in Avdella, Grevena, at the end of the 19th century and made history with their unique art by excelling in the Balkans. The exhibition presents a large collection of photographs from the personal archive of Leonidas Manakis, son of Miltos Manakias, donated to IMMA by the Ambassador Extraordinary Mr. Alexandros Mallias. Visitors will also have the opportunity to watch the documentary of the same name, produced by the filmmaker Akis Loukas.
The exhibition in Grevena is part of the program of the 2nd International Manakia Film Festival of Fine Arts and is co-organized by the Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and the Modern History of Macedonia, the Film Club of Grevena, the Solidarity and Volunteerism Association “Elpida” and the creative agency “S+ αισθeτικό”. The exhibition is curated by Mrs. Stavroula Mavrogeni, Professor at the University of Macedonia and Director of the Centre for Macedonian History and Documentation Research.
The opening of the exhibition will take place on Saturday 14 October 2023 at 11:30 a.m., while the exhibition will be open to the public from Friday 13 October, the day of the “Eleutheria” (Liberation Day) of the City of Grevena, after the traditional parade.
