The Comics Workshop Series at IMMA Was Successfully Completed

The first cycle of creative comics workshops for children aged 10 to 14, organised by the Foundation of the Museum for the Macedonian Struggle and the Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA), was completed with great success.

Over the course of three sessions, the children had the opportunity to explore the Museum’s collections and archival material, draw inspiration from people and events connected to the Modern History of Macedonia, and discover the possibilities offered by the art of comics as a means of creative storytelling and self-expression. Under the guidance of illustrator and Guagua Planet co-creator Dimitris Trakosas, the participants became familiar with basic drawing techniques, developed their own stories, and created original works combining imagination with historical knowledge.

The enthusiastic response from the children and their families confirmed the significant educational and social contribution of these activities to developing an experiential relationship between children, teenagers, and the museum experience. The workshops encouraged creativity, critical thinking, and active participation in the exploration of History.

The success of the programme creates excellent prospects for its continuation. Dimitris Trakosas will also participate in this year’s summer creative workshops at IMMA, which will take place from 16 to 26 June 2026, offering children new opportunities to explore the world of comics, illustration, and creative storytelling through activities inspired by the Museum’s collections and history.

At the same time, the strong interest generated by this first cycle of workshops confirms that visual storytelling can serve as an excellent tool for introducing younger audiences to History. For this reason, IMMA’s comics workshops will return in the autumn with a new series of sessions, giving even more children the opportunity to discover the Modern History of Macedonia through the power of images and storytelling.
