International Museum Day at the Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA) with two unique events connecting Thessaloniki and Athens, in collaboration with the Museum of School Life and Education!

The two museums, known for their educational work, join forces on the occasion of the celebration of International Museum Day 2025 to convey the architectural culture and heritage of the 19th century to younger generations through an experiential approach.

The Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA) in Thessaloniki and the Museum of School Life and Education in Athens meet on the paths of Ernst Ziller! Focusing on the neoclassical buildings designed by the German architect in the centers of both cities, IMMA’s event in Thessaloniki is aimed at families and youth and includes an educational walking tour to:
a) the Old Domestic Science School of Thessaloniki,
b) the building complex of the Holy Metropolis of Thessaloniki, and
c) the iconic building of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle.

This will be followed by an interactive workshop featuring theatrical activities for children, the use of digital applications, and a design exercise inspired by the IMMA building — all aimed at providing an immersive experience of neoclassicism in architecture and local history. To conclude the event, the two museums will connect live from their permanent exhibition spaces.

The walk in Thessaloniki will bring the history of the buildings to life through the iconic figures who lived in them and the stories that unfolded over time. The power of architecture will be combined with the most significant historical events that marked modern Macedonian history. The experiential tour of Ziller’s neoclassical buildings will be artistically captured later within the museum’s emblematic rooms through theatrical storytelling and drawing, showcasing the creative talents of young and old alike!

Come and discover the neoclassical buildings designed by Ernst Ziller and their secrets in a fascinating journey through time and the history of Thessaloniki!
