With a massive turnout and in a particularly warm atmosphere, the presentation of the book “Between the Waves and the Maps of the Aegean” by Emeritus Professor of AUTH and collector Mr. Paraskevas Savaidis took place on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle (IMMA).

The book follows the personal stories of British hydrographers in the Aegean during the 19th century, while also shedding light on lesser-known aspects of the region’s history, emphasizing the need to create accurate nautical charts of the coasts of Eastern Europe. Intrigues, conflicts, wars, power struggles, conspiracies, and assassinations come to life before the reader’s eyes with cinematic flow and vivid writing.

In a heartfelt tone, enriched with personal testimonies about life at sea and the painstaking process of map collecting, distinguished speakers shared their insights:

  • Captain Dimitrios Patsikas, Commander of NASVE and Director of MAA A/T VELOS

  • Emeritus Professor of the Medical School of AUTH, Mr. Alexandros Garyfallos

  • President of the Sailing Club of Thessaloniki, Mr. Konstantinos Chatzaridis

In her greeting, the Director of IMMA, Ms. Athena Pavlidou, warmly thanked the author for his constructive collaboration with the Foundation. She also referred to the namesake exhibition of nautical maps, hosted at the Museum until March 30, 2025, as well as the highly successful series of lectures and guided tours that accompanied it, attracting hundreds of visitors from Greece and abroad.
