IMMA Celebrated International Museum Day 2025!

The Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA) participated once again this year in the celebration of International Museum Day 2025 with the theme “Museums and societies in constant transformation,” organizing interactive events and collaborative actions with other museums in Thessaloniki and Athens!

Specifically, on the morning of Sunday, May 18, IMMA in Thessaloniki and the Museum of School Life and Education in Athens joined forces for a unique educational experience for families and children of all ages!

Through an immersive walk around the neoclassical buildings designed by Ziller (Old Home Economics School of Thessaloniki, Metropolitan Church of Saint Gregory Palamas, Museum of the Macedonian Struggle) in the city center, participants were taken on a journey that connected architectural heritage with the modern history of Thessaloniki.

The educational activity concluded in the iconic IMMA building (formerly the Consulate General of Greece in Thessaloniki during the Ottoman period) with a theatrical play and an art workshop for both children and adults inside the museum’s exhibition halls.

With the help of technology, the two museums “connected” live, creating a dialogue between two museums and two cities, with the participation of parents and children who shared experiences and exchanged wishes for continued collaboration.

At the same time, guided tours were held, and visitors had the opportunity to engage with IMMA’s new digital tools (audio guide, treasure hunt game, virtual tour, etc.) with free access to all museum exhibition spaces, attracting a large number of visitors from Thessaloniki and other cities across Greece!

On the same afternoon, IMMA co-organized an original multi-themed celebration for families and children titled MUSEUMS in ACTION – “Culture 4 Family”. The event was co-created by four active museums in Thessaloniki: the Olympic Museum, the Museum of Nautical Sports, the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, and the NOESIS Science Center and Technology Museum, with free admission at Pier A of the Port of Thessaloniki!

With a shared goal of highlighting the role of education in culture, hundreds of visitors, tourists, youth, and families from Greece and abroad had the opportunity to connect in a hands-on way with Thessaloniki’s cultural identity—both through the distinct themes of each museum and their collective action. Activities included educational and sports games, experiments and crafts, painting, and collage!

The Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia, faithful to its educational policy and in alignment with ICOM’s core values of cultural collaboration and prosperity, continues to renew and enrich its themed activities and partnerships.
