Training workshop: “Memory, Theology, and Education in Dialogue”

As part of the parallel activities of the periodic photography exhibition “Spaces of Memory – Places of Martyrdom” by Nikos Kosmidis, hosted in the “Alexandros Chaitoglou” Hall at the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle, a teacher training workshop entitled “Memory, Theology, and Education in Dialogue” was held on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

Historical memory, theology, and education came together in a very lively dialogue, and the interventions highlighted the importance of spaces of memory in contemporary school and social reality, as well as their theological dimension.

The workshop was organized by the Panhellenic Theological Association KAIROS of Central Macedonia and the program Actions of History, Memory, and Culture, with the support of the Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and the Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA). Participants included Education Advisors, active and retired teachers, as well as students from Thessaloniki and the wider region of Central Macedonia.

Participants were welcomed by Professor at the University of Macedonia and Director of KEMIT at IMMA, Ms. Stavroula Mavrogeni, while greetings and presentations were delivered respectively by Professor Petros Panagiotopoulos, President of the KAIROS Association; Grigoris Mavrokostidis, retired educator and theologian; Thodoris Sarafidis, educator and coordinator of the development of the related educational program; and Mr. Kosmidis, who also had overall coordination of the workshop.

The workshop concluded with a lively dialogue between speakers and participants, focusing on the role of the school not merely as an implementer of programs, but as a space for students’ meaningful engagement with complex historical and ethical issues.

The exhibition “Spaces of Memory – Places of Martyrdom” has been extended until the end of February.
