IMMA Co-organised the Annual Meeting of the International Association of Museums of History (IAMH)

As part of its strategy to promote openness and international cooperation, IMMA has been actively participating in the International Association of Museums of History (IAMH) since March 2024. IAMH is an international organisation connecting history museums and cultural professionals from around the world.

In 2025, IMMA co-organised and hosted IAMH’s annual meeting, bringing together museum professionals, researchers and representatives of cultural organisations from Serbia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, France and Greece. Participants had the opportunity to learn about IMMA’s work and exchange views on public history, historical memory, identity and the management of complex historical narratives.

During the meeting, the Director of the Foundation, Ms Athena Pavlidou, presented IMMA’s work and strategic planning, while IMMA research associate Dr Konstantinos Papanikolaou guided participants through the Museum’s permanent exhibition spaces.

This was followed by an academic discussion featuring presentations by Professor Stavroula Mavrogeni of the University of Macedonia, Director of IMMA’s Centre for Research on Macedonian History and Documentation (KEMIT-IMMA); Professor Alexandra Bounia of the University of the Aegean, former President of the Greek National Committee of ICOM; and Professor Andromache Gazi of Panteion University, Head Curator of the Holocaust Museum of Greece, which is currently under development.

The presentations focused on contemporary museum narratives, the management of historical memory, the concepts of identity and inclusion, and the social role of museums in the modern era. They contributed to a productive international dialogue and to the exchange of good practices among cultural organisations from different countries.

IMMA’s participation in the IAMH network strengthens the Foundation’s international presence and confirms its active role in the dialogue surrounding historical memory, museum practices and contemporary approaches to interpreting and presenting history.
