WOMEN, the Power of Creation

The Foundation of the Museum for the Macedonian Struggle and the Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA) has the honor of hosting the multi-themed art exhibition featuring the works of five contemporary women artists, titled “WOMEN, the Power of Creation”, from April 4 to July 31, 2025, at the Alexandros Haitoglou Hall in the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle.

Women, both as symbol and image, have long occupied and continue to occupy a central role in art. Five contemporary female visual artists unite their art through personal and collective memory, reflecting their concern for women’s experiences through the centuries, and highlighting the role of women in 21st-century society through their works. A common characteristic of their work is the presentation of “memories,” which each woman carries through her personal history and family heritage.

As the exhibition curator, Ms. Stavroula Mavrogeni, aptly notes:
“We are our ‘memories.’ Through them and thanks to them, we perceive, move, think, feel, design, and create. Our ability to remember influences the decisions we make and defines our personal identity.”

Their creations serve as a “vehicle” for understanding an era, a concept, or a new space. Stories and myths, themes of identity and heritage, touch the senses through an associative “dialogue” with the audience. The diversity of expression and materials used is connected and recorded in the works through the individual lens of viewing the family world and the evolving social role of women over time.

Five exceptional artists exhibit at the Museum, presenting works rich with memories and personal experience. Their creations highlight the dynamic journey of women towards emancipation, seen through the unique perspective of a 21st-century individual. Their need for expression is conveyed both through traditional methods, such as weaving, and innovative techniques like constructions and collage.

The exhibition is complemented by objects from the Collection of the Folklife and Ethnological Museum of Macedonia-Thrace.
