Talks and Guided Tours at IMMA’s Nautical Chart Exhibition<\/strong><\/h3>\n

“Between the Waves and the Maps of the Aegean”<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

As part of the successful run of the Nautical Chart Exhibition<\/strong> by Professor Emeritus Paraskevas Savvaidis (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki)<\/strong>, titled “Between the Waves and the Maps of the Aegean,”<\/em> the Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and Modern History of Macedonia (IMMA)<\/strong> is organizing a series of talks and guided tours<\/strong> and invites you to attend.<\/p>\n

\n

The exhibition showcases the efforts and adventures of British hydrographers<\/strong> in the mid-19th century, who explored and mapped coastlines, islands, and ports for the British Admiralty<\/strong>. Captains and sailors aboard hydrographic vessels conducted precise surveys of the Aegean islands, the coasts of Greece, Asia Minor, Crete, and Cyprus<\/strong>. At a time when geographical knowledge of the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean<\/strong> was nearly nonexistent, these hydrographers produced high-quality nautical charts<\/strong>. Their work significantly contributed not only to navigation, cartography, and geography<\/strong> but also to archaeological research and natural history<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
