The Foundation of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle and of Modern Macedonian History invites you to the opening of the photography exhibition \u201cSites of Memory, Places of Martyrdom\u201d<\/strong> by Nikos Kosmidis<\/strong>, on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at 19:00<\/strong>, in the \u201cAlexandros Chaitoglou\u201d Hall<\/strong> of the Museum of the Macedonian Struggle.
The exhibition will be inaugurated by the Deputy Regional Governor of Thessaloniki<\/strong>, Mr. Konstantinos N. Gioutikas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Historical memory is not merely a recollection of the past; it is a living mechanism that allows societies to reflect on their course and redefine their values. Places of memory<\/strong>\u2014spaces where memory acquires material and experiential dimensions\u2014play a crucial role in preserving this historical consciousness.<\/p>\n

Curated by Professor Stavroula Mavrogeni<\/strong> of the Department of Balkan, Slavic, and Oriental Studies and Director of KEMIT\u2013IMMA<\/strong>, the exhibition \u201cSites of Memory, Places of Martyrdom\u201d<\/strong> presents, through rich photographic material, memorial sites and places of martyrdom from World War II<\/strong> in Greece and Europe<\/strong>.
The selected photographs shed light on the historical and moral significance of these sites\u2014places of sacrifice, resistance, and human suffering<\/strong>\u2014reminding us that the active preservation of memory is an act of responsibility and democratic awareness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The exhibition is held on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II<\/strong> and is organized in collaboration with the program \u201cActions of History, Memory, and Culture\u201d<\/strong>, with the support of the Thrace Foundation for Art and Tradition<\/strong>.
The general coordination is by Ms. Athina Pavlidou<\/strong>, Philologist\u2013Museologist and Director of IMMA<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The photographs of Nikos Kosmidis<\/strong>, PhD Candidate<\/strong> at the Department of Architecture, Democritus University of Thrace<\/strong>, are part of a ten-year field research<\/strong> on sites and landmarks of dark memory<\/strong> across Europe, exploring the relationship between space, memory, and identity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The exhibition reminds us that memory is not only about the past<\/strong>\u2014it primarily concerns the present and the future<\/strong>. For it is only through memory that we can build a more just, tolerant, and democratic world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

As part of the exhibition, thematic tours<\/strong> will be offered for the educational community<\/strong>, along with an educational program<\/strong> through which students will approach the history of World War II with a critical and contemporary perspective<\/strong>, reflecting on issues of identity, stereotypes, and collective responsibility<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
