“Sites of Memory – Places of Martyrdom: Managing Memory”

The new educational program of the Museum for the Macedonian Struggle (IMMA) presents an interdisciplinary approach that connects memory with society, focusing on the historical events of World War II and their impact on both Greece and the rest of Europe. The program’s interdisciplinary themes offer a series of student-centered activities related to local history, the exploration of stereotypes concerning racial differences and gender identities, and reflections that students can gain through their visits.

The content of the program unfolds in three stages and includes a guided tour of the Museum’s permanent collection, a visit to the World War II exhibits that vividly link students’ existing knowledge and the historical information from the tour with the everyday life of soldiers and the inhabitants of Macedonia during the triple occupation, and an interactive tour of Nikos Kosmidis’s photography exhibition “Sites of Memory – Places of Martyrdom.” There, students engage with European contexts of World War II, Monumental Art, and the concept of memory management.
