The IMMA at the scientific conference of ELLET

On Saturday, May 9, 2026, IMMA participated in the conference titled “The cultural heritage of the Thessaloniki plain: documenting the history and monuments of the area of the former Lake Giannitsa,” organized by the Thessaloniki Branch of the Hellenic Society for the Environment and Cultural Heritage (ELLET – Thessaloniki Branch) and the Industrial Heritage Committee of ELLET, on the initiative of local citizens and under the auspices of the Municipality of Alexandria, at the Conference and Exhibition Center of History and Folklore of the Municipality of Alexandria.
A greeting was delivered by the Mayor of Alexandria, Mr. Panagiotis Gkyrinis, followed by introductory remarks from the President of the Thessaloniki Branch of ELLET and coordinator of the conference, Ms. Olga Deligianni, and ELLET member Mr. Manolis Pourliotis. An extensive introduction was given by the researcher, author, and folklorist of Roumlouki, Mr. Giannis Moschopoulos.
Under the title “The significance of Lake Giannitsa during the late Ottoman period (1870–1912),” Mr. Vangelis Kansizoglou, historian and researcher at IMMA, presented his paper, highlighting the historical role played by the natural environment of Lake Giannitsa during the Macedonian Struggle and the way its subsequent utilization contributed to the modernization of Macedonia.
